Isolation Doubles

by Vic Lindal

How do you create game situation drills to isolate a particular skill?

We have been experimenting with ideas to get a skill or a position isolated for practice and at the same time create a game like simulation.

These drills have been used for the last 7 years at every level from under 16 to University. We are constantly refining and changing so would appreciate any ideas that coaches have.

Team Play Isolation drills.

All of the samples given are only to stimulate the mind.

Every coach must consider the most pressing need for his or her team and then create a drill in a game like situation that will allow you to achieve the desired result.

The keys are as follows:

  1. Simulation, Simulation, Simulation (did we say simulation)
  2. Keep score.
  3. Declare a winner.
  4. Coach within the drill/game. This is subtle but critical. You must catch the player doing it right and be sure they know. (read: "The One Minute Manager")
  5. Errors are corrected as a redirection. Stop for a second and give another ball very similar to the last one.
  6. Be sure players are doing check lists and EPV's in every drill/game.
  7. Keep every one active and do these games early in every practice. These drills work well as a warm up.
