Here are some bad habits of setters that you should try to break.
bulletAnticipating bad passes: when releasing, setters should go where the passers expect them to be. Setters often stand far from zone 7 in anticipation of a bad pass; then, when the pass is perfect and tight in zone 7, the setter must run to the ball a t the last moment and dump it.
bulletNot calling help soon enough. The setter needs to immediately call for help or go set the ball...never both.
bulletAlways hand-setting forward and bump-setting backward, or vice-versa.
bulletAlways dumping a tight pass.
bulletLeaning backwards when back-setting.
bulletBeing a "fair" setter: setting left, then middle, then right, etc.
bulletNot setting a player that just made a hitting error.
bulletSetting the wrong player on a bad pass. It is often easier for the setter to set the hitter standing closest, but on a bad pass this is often too difficult an angle for the hitter to get a decent hit.
bulletOnly jumping when dumping, never when setting.
