Offensive Hand Signals and Set Descriptions  
   
 
 
Set Hand Signal Description
First-tempo sets
1 (51) Index finger Hitter is at peak of jump when the setter contacts the ball. Set is 1-2’ above the net, 1-2’ in front of the setter.
Back 1 (71) Little finger Hitter is at peak of jump when the setter contacts the ball. Set is 1-2’ above the net, 1-2’ in back of the setter.
Shoot (11) Index finger and thumb (like a gun) Hitter jumps as the setter contacts the ball. Set is 1-2" above the net pushed out to the left antenna.
Second-tempo sets
2 (53) Index and middle fingers Hitter is between the first and second steps of a three-step approach when the setter contacts the ball. Set is 1m above the net, 1m in front of the setter.
Back 2 (73) Third and fourth fingers Hitter is between the first and second steps of a three-step approach when the setter contacts the ball. Set is 1m above the net 1m in back of the setter.
3 (33) First three fingers Hitter is on the first step of a three-step approach when the setter contacts the ball. Set is 1m above the net, midway between the setter and the left antenna.
Slide (93) Thumb only, pointing at right antenna Hitter is on the first step of a three-step approach when the setter contacts the ball. Set is 1m above the net, within 1m of the right antenna. Attack is made using a 1-leg take off.
Pump fake 1 Index finger with thumb moving up and down The hitter approaches and plants as if hitting a one. The hitter then executes a pump fake and jumps in time to hit a two.
Step around Index finger, third, and fourth finger, with thumb moving up and down The hitter approaches and plants as if hitting a one. The hitter then jumps to the right to plant and hit a back two.
Third-tempo sets
4 (19) Four fingers High outside set within 1m of the left antenna.
5 (99) Five fingers High outside set within 1m of the right antenna
Combinations
X Crossed first and second fingers Middle hitter approaches to hit a ‘1’; right side hitter approaches to hit a ‘2’
Fake X Crossed first and second fingers, thumb moving up and down Middle hitter approaches to hit a ‘1’; right side hitter takes first approach step to hit a ‘2’ then changes and completes the approach to hit a ‘back 2’.
Back row sets
A Hand over right side of chest. Back row attack from the left side of the court.
D Hand over left side of chest. Back row attack from the right side of the court.
Pipe Hand perpendicular to chest with index finger in. Back row attack down the center of the court.
