The following list of sets and their attributes is not exhaustive, just a list of examples. Included is the number that is often associated with this set. Note that different teams use different numbering schemes. The numbers are not important, as long as everyone knows which set is which. You can also read about attack strategies and plays.

Set Attributes
high outside
5
Description: A high set to the left side hitter.
Pros: Gives you the best view of the court, and allows you to get a nice long approach. A good set for players who don't need to do anything fancy to get a kill.
Cons: Two (or even three) blockers have time to get there.
medium high outside
4
Description: A medium high set to the left side hitter.
Pros: The hitter may be able to hit against only one blocker.
Cons: A shorter or faster approach is necessary.
outside shoot
51 or 41
Description: A low, fast set to the left side hitter, near the sideline.
Pros: Very fast, usually against only one late blocker, sometimes against no blockers.
Cons: Hard to set, and almost impossible to hit if set wrong. Also hard for the hitter to time.
inside shoot
31
Description: A low, fast set halfway between the left sideline and the center of the net.
Pros: Fast attack, usually against one or two late blockers.
Cons: Somewhat difficult to set.
medium high middle
2
Description: A medium high set, usually near the center of the net.
Pros: Allows a middle hitter to get a decent approach and take a good swing.
Cons: Two (or even three) blockers have time to get there.
middle quick
1
Description: A low set to the middle hitter, hit directly in front of the setter, usually near the center of the net.
Pros: Very fast attack, usually against only one blocker.
Cons: The pass must be very good, the set must be precise, and the hitter must have good timing.
back quick
71
Description: A low set, hit directly behind the setter.
Pros: Very fast attack, usually against only one blocker.
Cons: The pass must be very good, the set must be precise, and the hitter must have good timing.
back medium high
72
Description: A medium high set, hit directly behind the setter.
Pros: Usually against one or two late blockers.
Cons: Slightly difficult to time, and the approach must be quick.
high right outside
94 or 95
Description: A high set to the right outside hitter.
Pros: Allows you to get a nice long approach. A good set for players who don't need to do anything fancy to get a kill.
Cons: Two (or even three) blockers have time to get there.
back slide
93
Description: Medium high set near the right antenna. The hitter comes from the setter's left, runs past the setter, and hits this ball near the right antenna.
Pros: Difficult for the blockers to set the block properly.
Cons: Somewhat difficult to time, and if the setter is in the front row, you will probably be double-blocked.
back row
A, B, C, D,
and pipe
Description: A set hit by a back row player. The court is divided into four attack zones for back row sets, from left to right, A to D. The pipe is right down the middle.
Pros: Good bail-out set if the pass is bad, also allows you to have three (or more) attackers at all times, even when the setter is in the front row. Hard to block.
Cons: Difficult for players who lack either timing or vertical to hit effectively. Must be set correctly, or the back row player will commit a back row attack violation.
