Training the Setter



Training the volleyball setter is predicated upon several basic factors:

1. System the team runs

2. Individual skill of the setter

3. Philosophy of the head coach

4. Amount of time for proper training

TRAINING PROGRESSION

1. Discuss body position at the net. Location of setter, and body position in regards to the SR and the attacker.

2. Discuss footwork.

3. DRY RUN

4. WALL SET (no variety)

bulletHave S set high against the wall and let the ball bounce and repeat set.
bulletThis drill should focus primarily on footwork, not accuracy or set location

5. LONG SHORT DRILL

bulletNeed 2 setters and 1 ball, both along the net
bulletSetter A sets long (15'-20') and follows ball to receive a short set from Setter B
bulletSetter B sets short (5')
bulletSetter A sets short back to setter B and backpeddles
bulletSetter B sets long and follows ball to receive short set from Setter A

6. TARGET LONG SHORT DRILL

bulletNeed 1 setter and 1 or 2 balls
bulletC stands on platform at target location and tosses to setter at location
bulletS sets to target and C tosses back to setter.
bulletC can stand at locations 4, 2, and 1 for setter to get a feel for location

7. VARYING WALL DRILL

bulletNeed 1 ball, 1 setter, and a wall
bulletTape up location boxes on wall from 7'5", 9', and 11' height
bulletThen locate on the floor feet from the wall 1', 3', 5', and 7'
bulletSetter is to continual set against the wall from different locations and at different heights

8. 3's BACKSET DRILL

bullet1 ball for 3 players
bulletsetter is in the middle of the outside 2 players.
bullet1 player begins by tossing to the setter in the middle. The setter backsets to the other

player

bulletsetter turns around and faces the other player to receive a pass or set. The middle setter

backsets once again

-continues

9. COACH TOSS PLAYER SETS

-2 balls and 2 targets, 2 setters

-C tosses from the floor (acting as a SR) to the S. Setter penetrates from various serve

receive locations

-S sets to various locations

-Establish goals for the setters. 30 seconds without a mistake, 20 sets in a minute, 10

consecutive passes to the locations without a mistake etc.

10. Work on footwork for out-of-system passes

-get to the ball and set through

-never turn your back on a pass or a passer

-always set off right foot

11. FILL IN THE SPACE

-3 setters, 1 ball, basketball key, and 4 cones or mats on the floor for identifying locations

-Works on squaring up to the target to set

-One person starts with the ball, he sets to one other person and fills the empt space

-Second person sets to the other person and fills the empty space

-Drill is continuous

-Increase difficulty by enlarging the square

12. COACHES TOSS PATTERN

-C with ball cart, 1 or 2 setter's, and a target

-C toss ball anywhere designated on the court

-S must run to the ball and follow setting rules and set high and outside

13. SERVER SERVE RECEIVER SETTER TARGET

14. Incorporate jump serving throughout the whole process above in steps #3-12

15. SETTER DUMPS

-Left-handed

-Two handed back and over set

-Off the net 2 handed set to middle of the court
